A bit about my teaching background: For many years I taught writing and English courses in the public school system. Some of the most personally and professionally rewarding of these years were spent as the department head of a literary arts program at a magnet high school. Our students won literary prizes from the likes of Scholastic Art and Writing, the Jack London Foundation, and YoungArts, among others.
During the last several years of my teaching career, I worked in a private school at the middle grade level, an environment I enjoyed immensely. Since my most recent book Sweetness All Around is categorized as a middle grade novel, I’m including ideas specifically designed for the middle grade classroom. However, these could be easily adapted for older students or even book clubs for adults.

Author Visits, Bookplates, Workshops, and Private Coaching
Reading is a form of connection, connection with a story and characters, connection with authors, and connection with one another. Don’t see an option that suits you? Have questions about scheduling and pricing? You can reach out here.

In-Person Visits
Guidelines: This option includes three presentations per day. Some schools or organizations may be eligible for a sliding scale fee.
- Reader-centered school and homeschool events are more successful when students have had an opportunity to read the book. In advance of my visit, I’ll send the organizer an interactive reader’s guide (digital form only) so that students can engage with the text and brainstorm questions and ideas as they read. This will help them get to know me before the visit and make for a more engaging experience overall.
- If students haven’t had the opportunity to read the book prior to the visit, our discussion will shift to more general topics such as the writing process, what it’s like to be an author, and why creative writing is so much fun and personally beneficial. We’ll do an activity (or two) to get them thinking about their own stories! This event can also include a reading of the first chapter.
- Writing workshops (available to grades four and up) are a great way to get students interested in reading and writing. Everyone has a story, after all, and most kids and adults enjoy mining their own lives for ideas.
- Signings and/or Bookplates are available following the event.
- Baltimore/D.C./Delaware/Virginia/West Virginia events can also include an in-depth look at the editorial process, complete with editorial letters and all my cringy drafts (available to grades five and up).

Virtual Visits
Guidelines: With the verified purchase of 20 copies of Sweetness All Around, I’ll do a virtual session for free. This works best for small groups.
Mentoring and Coaching
Guidelines: This option is available for individuals or small groups (3–5 adults, ages 18 and up) via Zoom. Sessions are 40 minutes in length and can be adapted for specific needs of attendees.
Bookstores, Book Clubs, Camps, Libraries, and Community Events
Guidelines: These visits are tailored to suit the needs of the organizer. Such in-person visits might include a reading, signing, writing workshop, information session for aspiring authors, an informal discussion, or fun brainstorming activities. Some organizations may be eligible for a sliding scale fee.
- Bookplates are available for bookstores, book clubs, and school groups within the United States. Remuneration for postage and/or proof of purchase may be required.

Just for Teachers
Guidelines: If you’re looking to incorporate more writing in your classroom or homeschool environment, 40-minute Zoom sessions are available to help you get started. You’ll learn specific strategies for implementing writing warm-ups and creative writing assignments and learn more about the long-term benefits for students. You’ll also learn techniques for making writing more fun for students and less work for you.
- Looking to get your students reading more and scrolling less? Learn more about the many benefits of reading for pleasure and specific strategies to get kids reading for fun.
Extended Workshops for Schools and Groups
Guidelines: Want to implement creative writing in your curriculum? Are your teachers already overloaded with too many other things to do? Okay, that was a silly question because all teachers are overloaded. Short-term workshops (2–4 days) are available for small groups (no more than 15 students). This will include reading and writing short fictional stories, writers’ workshops, coffeehouse-style reading, and a personal critique for each student from yours truly.
